AIR VENT: A permanent air vent is only required if a gas fire has a rated gas input of more than 7 kW and consumes more than seventy cubic metres of air per hour.

BUILDERS OPENING: Refers to the structural opening at the base of the chimney formed in a wall or chimney breast, often lined with a fireback to accommodate an inset open fire.

CONVECTOR FIRES: These gas fires provide additional heat in the form of convected hot air. Depending on the room size they can be the only source of heat.

CORGI: Council for Registered Gas Installers. All gas fires have to be installed and serviced by a CORGI registered engineer.

DEBRIS: If a chimney has previously been used with solid fuel, there is a risk of sand or soot particles, known as debris, falling into the fire. If your fire has this problem, we recommend the installation of a flexible flue liner.

DEBRIS SPACE: A debris collection space of 12 litres is required at the base of a chimney unless it is steel lined or of flue block construction.

FLEXIBLE FLUE LINER: Made from stainless steel, flexible flue liners are normally used if the chimney wall has deteriorated.

HEARTH: A Hearth is not required if the base of the fire is at least 150mm above floor level. Otherwise, a fireproof hearth is required (minimum dimensions 300mm deep x 600mm wide x 50mm high).

MANTEL REBATE: The distance a fireplace back panel is positioned off the wall by the structure of the mantel.

RADIANT FIRES: These gas fires provide radiant heat derived from the glow of the fire. They can be used to complement a centrally heated room.

RUNNING COSTS: To work out the natural gas running cost simply multiply the gas input by your gas bill tariff.
